Speed World Record: South Pole 2024

Who?

AK Teigland from Øystese, Hardanger. Grew up on a farm. Has scouting experience since 1992 and herded sheep with local farmers in jeans and logging boots on steep slopes in 1996. Has a taste for heavy metal, indie pop, and German electronica. Completed an expedition to the South Pole in 2022/2023 and enjoyed it.

What?

With the Norwegian flag on his chest, on the sled, and in his heart, the next goal is clear:

The fastest man to the South Pole ever, from Hercules Inlet to 90 degrees south.

Can a half-trained workhorse/full-fledged tough guy manage to walk 54 km each day and end up at the South Pole in under 22 days?

Slogan:

«Never give up»

Where?

The route starts from Hercules Inlet and is 1130 km long, often considered the main route to the South Pole. From the start at the inner coastline, the course heads straight towards 90 degrees south and 2800 meters above sea level. Entry will be via Punta Arenas in Chile to the Union Glacier base and then to the starting point.

Why?

The Norwegian polar legend Christian Eide held the record at 24 days until 2024. Frenchman Vincent Colliard pushed the limits of what is possible and lowered the record to the South Pole to 22 days, 6 hours, and 8 minutes in January. This is a remarkable achievement and a milestone in polar history. Congratulations to a great and generous man.

My goal is the same, but my motivation has increased and is now a national concern. Norway has a long and strong tradition in Antarctica, and it is an honor to wear the flag on my chest and take on the challenge of bringing the record home. Norwegian polar tradition is deeply rooted in Antarctica and will be honored along the way, pushing ahead with the aim of reaching the South Pole with an average of 54 km per day and once again planting the Norwegian flag at the South Pole.

How?

The strategy is ruthless: all established truths will be challenged. Equipment, routines, training, and nutrition will all be thoroughly reviewed, refined, and implemented as groundbreaking polar craftsmanship.
